About the Project
Welcome to the Essex public sculpture and monuments website. This site contains an ever-growing database of public sculpture and monuments in Essex. It is the result of collaboration between the Public Monuments and Sculpture Association, the Public Catalogue Foundation, Colchester Institute, and a network of volunteers from across the county.
The searchable online database will provide photographic and descriptive details for the entire county for the first time. We have only just begun our survey and are always keen to hear from people who would like to get involved and help us record more objects from across Essex. If you are aware of a monument or sculpture that does not feature in our database then please let us let us know. (See our contact page for details.)
All images on the website are available for re-use for non-commercial purposes under the creative commons license. Higher resolution images are available upon request.
The aim of the project is to compile a database of all the public monuments and sculpture in Essex, as at the moment a comprehensive record does not exist. The duration of the project is two years, finishing in the autumn of 2016. The information to be collected on the sculpture and monuments is considerable, much of which can be recorded by an onsite survey, and some of which will be the result of desktop research. Each record includes a small selection of good quality photographs. The records from Essex will be incorporated into the PMSA’s national database and form part of their National Recording Project.
The intention for the Essex project is to encourage broader participation in the recording process as part of the PMSA’s attempts to promote wider engagement with public art. If you would like to get involved with the project we would love to hear from you.
If you are a teacher or lecturer working in Essex please contact us to see how we can help provide learning opportunities for your students.
